Finding Your Purpose is Like Having Perfect Product-Market Fit

Marc Andreessen described it perfectly:

“You can always feel when product/market fit isn’t happening… But when it is, customers are buying your product as fast as you can make it.”

Product-market fit is all about perfect alignment. 

The product you’ve created fits seamlessly with what the market is hungry for.

And when that happens, everything flows. No more pushing uphill. No more pivoting. Growth becomes almost effortless. You’re no longer just running a business; you’re leading a movement.

To be honest, you don’t even care if you get paid - you’re just in the zone and in flow - and best of all, it feels natural.

Purpose, like product-market fit, is about finding that sweet spot where everything aligns.

Here’s the beauty of it.

Product-Market fit is just a problem for start-up founders to resolve. And they put all of their funds, resources, energies and efforts towards it. Because they know it will pay off in the end. Some may fail but they fight til the very end. 

The problem of purpose however affects each and every one of us. And it will have a similar payoff in that it will activate you to become a different beast entirely. But there seems to be a reluctance or at least a lack of urgency for people to pursue this path. 

Eric Ries, author of the Lean Start Up describes product/market fit as:

“the moment when a startup finally finds a widespread set of customers that resonate with its product”. 

To use the same reference, I, therefore, describe purpose as the moment when an individual finally finds where his widespread skills and passions resonate with his true calling in life.
